Types of hearing aids: which style may fit your needs?
The main hearing aid styles differ in where the microphone, processor, receiver and battery sit. Style affects visibility, power, handling, comfort and maintenance—but the smallest or newest device is not automatically the best match.
This guide explains categories, not individual brands or models. A recommendation requires hearing results and an examination of your ears.
Receiver-in-canal (RIC) and behind-the-ear (BTE)
Both categories come in many sizes and technology levels. A custom earmold may improve retention or acoustic control for some fittings.
In-the-ear (ITE), in-the-canal (ITC) and completely-in-canal (CIC)
These styles place more or all of the device inside the outer ear or ear canal. ITE devices fill more of the outer ear and may provide larger controls or batteries. ITC devices sit partly in the canal. CIC devices sit more deeply and may be less visible.
Smaller is a tradeoff, not a quality ranking. Very small devices may be harder to insert, clean or adjust and may have less room for controls or batteries. Ear-canal size, wax, moisture and the amount of power needed can limit which style is appropriate.
What are CROS and BiCROS hearing aids?
A CROS system is designed for certain people who have unaidable hearing in one ear and usable hearing in the other. A microphone on the poorer side sends sound to the better-hearing ear. It helps access sound arriving from that side; it does not restore hearing in the unaidable ear.
A BiCROS system also sends sound from the poorer side, while providing amplification to the better ear when that ear also has hearing loss. Candidacy depends on the complete evaluation. The ASHA adult hearing aid guidance describes these routing systems.
Which features matter most?
Features should solve a real listening or handling need. Depending on the device, options may include directional microphones, noise-management processing, rechargeable batteries, telecoils, Bluetooth streaming, remote microphones, smartphone controls and tinnitus-related sound programs.
A feature list cannot replace a well-selected physical fit and verified programming. Ask how a recommended feature connects to a situation you named—for example, understanding a meeting, hearing a partner in a restaurant or taking calls at work.
How does an audiologist compare hearing aid styles?
- Hearing results: degree, shape, speech understanding and differences between ears.
- Ear health and anatomy: canal size, comfort, wax and medical findings.
- Daily life: work, family, phone, television, travel and background noise.
- Handling: vision, dexterity, charging, cleaning and controls.
- Support: verification, orientation, follow-up and future adjustments.
